What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure that uses specialized lasers to remove the outermost layer of damaged skin. When signs of aging impact skin, they primarily affect the top layer, so when that layer is carefully removed, it brings smoother, more youthful skin to the surface. Additionally, laser skin resurfacing can help stimulate the production of collagen, which keeps the skin firm and vibrant.

How Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Performed?

We use several lasers at HK Plastic Surgery & MedSpa to administer laser skin resurfacing. Each laser works differently to revitalize the skin.

eC02: ablative fractional laser emits potent, rapid bursts of energy, which only impact the targeted skin cells. The eC02 ablative fractional laser is excellent for treating acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and moderate to severe wrinkles.
TRL Erbium YAG laser: This unique laser features a computer-monitored interface for customized energy streams. The TRL Erbium YAG laser can treat blotchy skin, wrinkles, lines, and creases.
Renuivon Dermal Resurfacing: The Renuvion Dermal Resurfacing device is FDA-approved and used to tighten loose skin and revitalize the complexion. The device utilizes J-Plasma technology, which is made with radiofrequency energy that’s passed through cold helium. This treatment can also correct enlarged pores, reduce sun spots, and increase collagen production.
HALO hybrid fractional laser: The HALO hybrid fractional laser is a specialized laser that combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths to achieve superior results. This laser treats sun damage, wrinkles, scarring, skin discoloration, and laxity.

What Should I Expect During the Procedure?

When you decide to undergo Tampa laser skin resurfacing, you can begin by scheduling a consultation with Dr. Holcomb or Dr. Kreithen. They will ask you questions about your goals for the treatment and help you determine the best way to achieve your desired results.

The procedure will be performed on an outpatient basis. First, your surgeon will administer local anesthesia to prevent any pain. Then, they will carefully treat the target areas with the laser that has been selected. Typically, this will involve addressing each area of the face individually. Depending on the treatment's extent, the procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours.

What Can I Expect From the Recovery and Results?

After your laser skin resurfacing, a special dressing will be applied to the treatment areas, and your doctor will give you thorough instructions for managing the healing process. It can take up to two weeks to fully recover from the procedure, but you should be able to resume normal activity almost immediately.

You should notice immediate improvements to your skin, but there will likely be some redness for several weeks or months. As your skin recovers, the positive effects should become more visible. And if you consistently protect your skin from the sun, those results may last five years or longer.
